The death of .Mr David Weir, of Blackball, occurred after a Brief illness at tile Grey Hirer Hospital yesterday. The deceased, who was a well- ■ known contractor, and in his day a leading axeman and sawyer, who competed successfully in many contests, was admitted to the Hospital only a week ago. and underwent an operation on Tuesday last. He was highly esteemed by all who knew him. and the lie reared relatives will have the sympathy of many friends in their loss. At the Magistrate’s Court, this morning, before M.r A. I'.. Bcnajmin, •J.P.. Walter John Thorpe came up on remand on a charge of inflicting actual bodily harm. Four boats’ crews were soused in Akaroa harbour on Friday and a coxswain was nearly drowned, when their boats swamped during the progress of the second race on the regatta programme, owing to the heavy weather.
