[Australia «V N.Z. Cable Association.] FEWER MARRIAGES. NEW YORK, December 31. Figures on marriages gathered in the twenty leading cities of the United States indicate the institution is being hard pressed to maintain its popularity. Statistics show that the marriages in the cities surveyed decreased during 1923 by 2,433, as compared with the year 1924, when the total was 230,739. The representative cities selected in-
eluded New York (where there was a slight increase). Chicago, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Eos Angeles and New Orleans (all reporting decreases). Seattle lmd a heavy decrease from 10.31-1 marriages in 102-1 to 11,133 this year. This is the heaviest in the country, and equalled the nation's total loss. Philadelphia’s decrease is attributed to the coal strike, and the resultant lack of employment preventing mating, which, in times of prosperity, brought couples to the city for the ceremony. Buffalo (New York) where many people are married before going on honeymoon tours to Niagara Falls, registered the continued attraction of its scenic beauties with 5,216 marriages in 1923, compared with 3.(111-1 in 1921.
