ESCAPE AND'RECAPTURE OF A PRISONER. (Kuinarn "Times.” -Jth .lime. 1 .'f77). Considerable excitement was caused on Saturday by the news, which was freely erieulated through the town, that a man had keen arrested and had escaped From the constable, whom he laid considerably knocked about. The facts of the ease are briefly as follow. A warrant had been issued for the arrest of a man named Thomas Cam. alias Thomas Bathurst, on a charge oi having stolen a .silver watch. Constable McCarthy undertook the duly of arresting the accused, and found the man about half past, twelve o’clock. Cain is a heavy, powerful mean, and showed tight. Tile constable called some miners to his assistance, and with their aid (succeeded in jhandeiifi’ing Cain. So sooner were the handcuffs on. than Cain made a sudden, rush and gained possession ot a club some lour loot long. Armed with this, he cleared a passage for himsell. the by-stantlers refusing t > assist Al'Carthy to take il iioin him. Al'Carthy, nothing daunted, stuck elost' to his man. until in a lonely place the latter turned upon him. M’Carthy struck him on the head with a stick. A struggle then took place, during which Cain took hold of the constable by the throat and whiskers. A large portion of these lie tore out. lie also endeavoured to throttle API Milky, and had almost succeeded, when one of his lingers got into M’Carlhy’s. month. The constable set his jaws to work upon the finger. :tnd managed to get away from his assailant, who once more endeavoured to escape. At about I o'clock Cain rushed down a steep gully and was lost to the eousiah-b* sight, under cover of the thick Inoehwood. Al’Carthy then relimpiislied the (!n>se and returned 1o camp, llcrc. of course, the proper steps were taken and all (lie constables ordered out. in pursuit.
