BARE LEGS.
IN PAVLOVA'S PALLET. LONDON. November ti. Mine. Pavlova Mas amuse,l by the re-in-a I of the Birmingham Justices to allow any of her performers to appear in hare legs at the Grand Theatre, where she was giving a living matinee. The restriction is not new, lint Pavlova regards it as ridiculous, especially hearing in mind C e fact that hare legs and feet conform to the whole spirit and tradition of the Anit.ra dance, which is performed by Miss Elsie d’A rev.
When Mine. Pavlova learned of the ban on hare legs she authorised her manager either to cut out this solo dance or request Miss d’Arey to comply with the requirements of the local authorities. “.Mine. Pavolva," said Air Fdmitnd Russon. her manager. •• is too great an artist and too jealous of her reputation to permit any member of her company to do. wear, or not wear on tlie stage anything likelv to offend her public. Aliss d’Arey said the wearing of tights and sandals which had been decided upon would, she feared, be less t oinfortable I ban bare legs and feet , but would not. she hoped, interfere with the success of her dance. The attitude of the authorities towards the Pavlova performance did not differ in the slightest respect from that in relation to any other music-hall performance in the cit.v. About ton years ago the Magistrates prohibited bare legs on the stage, anil their decision has never been questioned. The performers may appear in tights. The .Magistrates refuse even to allow bare feet. Their ruling is that the whole of the lower portions of the body must be covered. Police attend every musicball performance.
