The renovation of the Methodist. Church is now almost complete. The carpenters have finished their pait and the painters are to lie finished about the middle of next week. The church will lie reopened on Sunday, l()th when the llcv. T. R. Richards, President of the Conference and a former minister of the church will conduct the services. The hist pile in the temporary structure of the Blackball railway bridge _ was driven on 3 uesday, and the bridge ; carpenters are now busily engaged doing the necessary bracing and decking. It is stated that the temporary structure will lie fully able to cope with the production of coal from the Blackball and Roa .Alines, and the timber from the Moonlight district mills. The Railway Department notify to-day that passenger and goods traffic over the bridge will be resumed on Mondaynext. Vehicular traffic will not yet he resumed. The earth will lie at its shortest distance from the sun on January 2nd at 3.30 p.m.. when the two bodies will ho about 91,110,000 miles apart. ' The planet Mercury rises on January Ist at 3 a.m.. and on January loth at 3.11 a.in. : at the beginning of tlie month it will he found well to the south of east. Its apparent magnitude increases during the month from —O.l to —0.5. Towards the end of January it will be too close to the sun to lie visible, leans sets on January Ist at 9.48 p.m., and on January 15th at 8.51 p.m., it will attain its maximum brightness on January 3rd. when its apparent magnitude will be —4.1. a degree of brilliance which will not he equalled again until 1928. Mars rises on January Ist at 1.59 a.tn.. and on January 15th at 1.37 a.m.; Jupiter sets on these dates at 8.48 p.m. and 8.2 p.m. respectively, and Saturn rises on those dates at 1.36 a.m., and 0.15 a.m. respectively.
