The first day of the New Zealand professional championship meeting was held in the Caledonian Ground to-day in heuatiful weather, before a largo attendance. Some fine running was witnessed. Dr McLennan (Canterbury) added to his reputation as one of the finest runners seen in New Zealand for a long time past. He won his heat in the 100 vards in the time given as 9 4-ssecs, hut this time must he open to doubt, as he was running against a fairly brisk breeze. He won the final even more easily in 10 l-osecs. E. Cook was second and C. W. Pearson third.
15. J. Grafton (14yds) won his heat and the final of the 220yds handicap easily. A. A. Cameron (91yds) was second, and W. A. Cubitt (14yds) was third. The time was 23 2-ssecs.
The 88()yds handicap was won -by C. A. Bone (12yds), 11. Eseroet (20vds) being second, and W. Archer (35yds) third. The time was given at 2min 0 4-ssecs.
The mile championship was run twice as on the first occasion it was found that a lap short had been covered. Fortunately, the three places in the first run were the same as in the second. viz.. .T. G. Newlamls 1. C. A. Bone 2. W. Archer 3. Time 4.48 1-5. C. B. Sytnen won the 440yds championship easily in 53 1-5 secs. A. A. Cameron was second and O. W. Smith third.
Mr R. Spillane, scratch (100 ft. 3in) won the 161 b hammer throw, AV. Murray, scratch (95ft 2in) being second. A. A. Cameron (ser) with 21ft 9in, won the broad jump handicap. .T. Murphv (24in) 20ft llin, being second and T. C. Lee (20i») 20ft 9in third. Phil O’Shea and A\ T ells were first ancl second in the mile cycle championship. In this event AVard, Parker, Henderson and Mackey fell in the last lap. AY ells, who was then hist, rode through for second place. Time 2.33 4-5. The three mile cycle championship was won by O’Shea with AA’ells second and .Mackey (Christchurch) third. Tlie big handicap (of £.50, second prize £lB, third £9, fourth £3), was won by Mackey from the syds mark; F. C. AA’ard (165yds) 2; J. Henderson ■ 65yds). 3 : C. R. Parker (65yds). 4. AA’ard (95yds) won the mile handicap H. AY. Birch (85yds), 2; C. R. ParkJfc (35vds) 3.
X. Z. U. CONFERENCE. DUNEDIN, December 29. The annual report stated that tho New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union commenced this morning. The annual report stated that the Union was disappointed with the attitude of the Northern Union of New Zealand. The Union took the trouble to spend a good deal of money to lfold out a disqualified competitor, D. Pretty and when the New Zealand Union asked the Northern Union to protect tho Northland centre against the defaulter, it got no reply. In its annual renort. tlie Northern Union stated that the New Zealand Union affiliated some of the former's clubs. The only clubs so affiliated were those unregistered. The report recommended the conference to withdraw the New Zealand’s Union’s arrangement with the Northern Union, and give authority to form a centre. The President (Mr Hansen) said that if the report were adopted it would ho cutting the painter with the northern body. Mr Collingwood said it \vas a recommendation to conference. The report was adopted.
