SUMMER MEETING
FIRST DAY RESULTS.
The Westland Racing Club opened its summer meeting on Saturday undei favourable weather conditions. After the heavy rain of the previous day and night, the day broke fine and at mid-dav the sun was bright and warm. \lKMit three o’clock the weather changed, and there was a light shower from the north-west and it became cold and bleak. Several showers fell between •I and 5.30 and spoilt the auspicious opening of the day. There was a fairly good attendance though it suffered in comparison with the previous year on the first day. The course and np■jointments were in good order and the various officials were all in their •daces, the afternoon passing off very successfully, right on time. Speculation was fairly brisk, hut three horse races for the 7th. ami Bth. events brought down the total, the sum of £8503 being handled by Mr Lynch for the afternoon as against CIO.BIO on the first day last year. The Town Rand was present and played a pleasing musical programme during the afternoon. The attendance included ■i good number from the north, the inward trains being well filled. After tho race for the Westland Cup Handicap. the President (Mr W. E. Williams) in pleasing terms presented the handsome silver cup donated by the Hokitika Licensed Victuallers Association to Mr T;. Ellis, on behalf of die owner, Mr 11. E. Hall, and be also presented the gold mounted whip, presented hv -Mr A. Snell, to the rider of Will Oakland, the winner (Mr Campbell). Horse, owner and jockey were heartily cheered. The results were as follows:- —
PROVINCIAL HANDICAP, -of £BO (second £lO and' third £8 out of stake), 0 furlongs: Pickaninny 8.8 1 Barleycorn 7.5 - Hallownoon 8.1 Also started :---Micro''B.l. Probate 7.11, Snxctte 7.2. Cash box 7.0. Pickauni uy soon took the load and was never headed, winning bv a long head from the fast finishing Barleycorn, whose rider lost his stirrup at the distance and nearly came off. Hallownoon was a length away third. Time 1.18. Tote £725. TUNNEL HANDICAP Of £9O (second horse £lB and third £9 out of stake) 7 furlongs. Equerry 8.7 1 Cnlibimi 8.2 - Bonnie Cold 9.5 8 Also started : Grov Lass 8.1. Equerry and Grey Lass went away in the lend till half way when Grey Lass dropped back beaten. Caliburn made a good run in the straight hut Equerry won verv easily by 11 lengths, third -I lengths away. Time 1.81 2-5. Tote £O6l. TASMAN HANDICAP HURDLES. Of £IOO (second horse £2O. third £lO out of stake) 11 miles. Uncle Dave 9.10 1 Cushman 10.-t 2 Tentorfield 10.5 8 Also started: Caverock 10.2, Ellah 9.2 Cushman led the field from I'.llali all fencing cleanly till the straight was entered when Uncle Dave who had boon lying hniulv came out to win easily by two lengths, Tentorfield five lengths away. Time 2.59 l-o. lotc (.10-18. WESTLAND CUP HANDICAP. OF £2OO (second lmrse £lO and third £2O out of stake) 1 mile. Silver Cup for owner and whip for jo-koy. Will Oakland B.IR I I’ara 8.8 2 Viewpoint 8.8 8 Also started : Clareina 9.8. Fresco 8.11. Prosperity 8.8. Prince Keroiiz 8.!. .Inbilant 8.2, Prince Charleroi 7.8. From a good staid Will Oakland. I’ara. Clareina and Prime Charleroi led the way. There was not much change as the straight was reached. Will Oakland running well and bolding bis own to win by a length. Vie" point a length away third, and Fresco dose up. Time 1.15. Tote £IB2B. CHRISTMAS HANDICAP, Of £IOO (second horse £2O and third £lO out of slake) 5.1 furlongs Some Abbey 8.8 1 Bene Mavis 7.8 2 Flying Master 8.7 8 Also started: Rig Push 8.10. Deep Drive 8.6. Guv ami Good 7.2. Bonny Clan 7.5. Some Abbey went away with a length load, which was maintained to the finish, winning by two lengths, third two lengths away. Time 1.51 2-5. Tote £9Bl. lire;H-WEIGHT handicap.
