SYDNEY. December 11. A distinguished appointment has just been conferred on Dr ('umbrae Stewart by the Senate of the Queensland University. lie has been made Garrick professor ol law on the Inundation created by Miss C'oeio Garrick, as a memorial to her lather, tin* late Sn James Garrick. (,).("'. The appointment will hold interest for New Zealanders, as Dr ('umbrae Stewart, late scholar of Christ Church. Oxford. Doctor of Civil Law. and of the Inner Temple, is a native ol New. Zealand. He was born at Riverslea, Canterbury. in 1865. His father, Air F. E. Stewart, was deputy superintendent in Canterbury for. and later general manager of, Goldsbrough. -Mori and Co. Ltd. The foundation of Professor Cumbrae Stewart’s education was laid at the Church of England Grammar School, .Melbourne. Afterwards he went to Christ Church. Oxford, where he had a most successful career. He was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1887. and is a. member of tho Bars of New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. He was created a Doctor of Civil Law in 1922. In 1902-3 he edited the Queensland State Law Reports, and on the foundation of the Queensland University in 1910. lie was appointed the first Registrar.

Professor ('umbrae Stewart is chairman of the Queensland Place Names Committee, president <>f the Historical Society of Queensland, president of the Brisbane Dickens Fellowship, a vicepresident of the Queensland Artists’ and Authors’ Association, and a member of the Queensland Press Institute. He is father of that distinguished artist Miss ('umbrae Stewart, who has met with considerable success in Paris and Ltuidon. as well as her native land.
