SUICIDE. DUNEDIN. Dec. 23. A married man named Patrick John liitey, a retired bootmaker, aged (>l. was found hanging ill a shed at his home at Green Island a 7.50 lasi nigh. ERUIT EXCHANGE EIRE. WELLINGTON. December 21. The fire in the AYellingtcm Emit Exchange' did considerable damage. It broke out in a throe-storeyed building occupied by Thompson Bees on the top tloor and Byron’s and Brown’s crockery store and it: was apparently on tins floor that it started. . It was not till 10 p.m., that the brigade succeeded in entirely suppressing it. The roof and top storey burned out and the water deluged the remainder ol the building. Thompson Bros stock of eonfeetmnerv. fancy goods, etc., was practically ruined by water and smoke. In the basement a large stock 01 groceries suffered severely and in t.u. fruit exchanges oranges, potatoes, etc-., were damaged. The loss is estimated at twenty thousand or more. A large quantity of cherries and other fruit from Sydney had just been ( 4,'a red or the loss would have been still greater. AYELLIXGTOjV. Dec. 24. The building was insured for £32,POO j,, the Boval Exchange, Thompson Rros. contents for £OO.OOO in the New Zealand North British and Alliance dli-es; Burgess and Brown’s stock 1 1 t£32,000 in the Standard and the fittings for £2OO.
