It was not till 10 p.m., that the brigade succeeded in entirely suppressing it. The roof and top storey burned out and the water deluged the remainder ol the building. Thompson Bros stock of eonfeetmnerv. fancy goods, etc., was practically ruined by water and smoke. In the basement a large stock 01 groceries suffered severely and in t.u. fruit exchanges oranges, potatoes, etc-., were damaged. The loss is estimated at twenty thousand or more. A large quantity of cherries and other fruit from Sydney had just been ( 4,'a red or the loss would have been still greater. AYELLIXGTOjV. Dec. 24.
