ON WORLD TOUR.
AMERICAN TOURISTS. AUCKLAND, Dec. 20. The 20,000-ton liner Carinthia, with .T7B wealthy American tourists aboard, bad delightful weather for her run through tho islands off the North Auckland coast to-day. The day was summery, the sea smooth' and the colouring oil land and sea was one long delight. The liner arrived in harbour at 3.15 p.m., and tied up at- the Princes Wharf two hours later. She is about sixteen hours ahead of schedule, but no doubt the tourists will lie glau of the extra time on land. Her visit marks the first time tt tourist litter has embraced New Zealand in her itinerary. and the occasion will he important, for it will lto doubt pave the way for similar cruises in future, and an increased number of tourists. Tho Carinthia sailed from New York on October 10, and has visited Los Angeles, San Francisco, Hilo, Honolulu and Japanese and Chinese ports. She came direct to Auckland from Port Moresby, New Guinea.
To-morrow morning the tourists will embark in a fleet ol about eighty motor-cars, and will he driven to places of interest in the city and suburbs, including Alount Eden, One Tree Ilill and Fillers!ie racecourse. Arrangements have been made for the party to have lunch at city hotels.
To-morrow a special train will leave Auckland for Rotorua, convoying seveny-eight tourists. They will be motored to Whakarcwarcwa, and will he entertained at a ALiori concert in the evening. A further party of fifty tourists will travel to Rotorua by the ordinary express on Tuesday morning. They will leave Rotorua the following day. joining the second express at Frankton .Junction in the evening to join the ship in Wellington. The Carinthia will sail from Wellington for Sydney on Thursday evening. The proposal that a party should proceed to Tatimaruntii and journey down the Wanganui River has been abandoned.
The Carinthia is under charter to the Raymond Whitcomb Tourist Company, of Boston, tho promoters of the present tour, and Hancock and Company arc their New Zealand agents. Some idea of tins expense involved in the lour may he gathered Irom the fact that best deck cabins were being sold for the trip in the vicinity of £2OOO. The ship will ho only a day in Wellington. She will arrive there from Auckland at daybreak on Thursday, and is scheduled to sail at eight o’clock the same evening for Sydney. Alter visiting Sydney the Carinthia will proceed to Hobart, Alelhourne, Fremantle, Batavia. Singapore, Colombo, Bombay, Cairo, Naples, Afonte Carlo, Gibraltar. Cherbourg and Southampton. The total distance covered will be 38.000 miles and the duration of the cruise will bo UK) days. The tour has been so arranged that the Carinthia will follow the paili of sunshine all round the globe. fn every place she visits the warm, favourable season will be in progress. The importance of tbo visit is not being lost sight of by the Tourist Department. Everything possible is being done to make the stay of the tourists a success in every way.
