SILK DUTIES FARCE.

LONDON, Oct. 18. Because tliov are resting in plush eases on tiny slips of silk, 40 gold and silver medals, won at the Paris Exhibition by British philatelists, are 1 icing detained by tho Customs authorities at Newliavon. Great Britain exhibited stamps to the value of £250.000 at tho Philatelic Exhibition in May. and won more awards than any other nation. The 1000 British collectors who visited the exhibition are now demanding to know when the 10 winners are to get their prizes. “I am quite helpless to distribute the awards,” said Mr F. God den, who was appointed honorary custodian of the British stamps. “Tho fact is that the Customs refuse to part with them, and they have been lying since September 10th. at Nowhaven, while the authorities have been quibbling about the value of the silk.”

The total fax payable will only be about 2s, but the attitude of the Cusloms has appeared to be, “Guess to a farthing what the silk linings are worth and you can have your medals.”
