QUARRY ACCIDENT.
GREYMOUTH, Dec. IG. A fatal accident happened yesterday in C'obden quarry to Mr Edward Spark. Yesterday morning, about 11.30, Mr Spark was standing between two loaded trucks when the locomotive moved up one truck for coupling, and the impici dislodged a piece of rock from the top of one truck, which struck him on the forehead, inflicting a severe cut mid rendering him unconscious'. It, was not this, however, that proved fatal. Lut the unfortunate man. in falling, struck the hack of his head upon one of the rails, causing a fracture at the base of the skull. ATr B. Ncpier’s ear happened to he in the vicinity at the time, 11.10 a.in. and the unconscious man was by it conveyed to the Grey River Hospital. ITo did not regain consciousness, however, and at 3 o’clock death took place. The deceased, who was an Australian, had latterly resided at Kaiata. He was about 43 rears of age. and leaves a wife and a large family numbering 13. the young-
est about three and a half years of age. He lived for many years in the liianguhiin district, where he was for a time manager of the Kccp-it-Park mine, while he later was a member of Hie Orongorongo Co-operative Tunnelling Party at Wellington, and subsequently was a member of the party which opened up Snieaton’.s Coal Mine at Brunner.
