TO THE COAST.

A'LTERNATIVE ROFTF, VIA COLERIDGE. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 10. At the present time, the West Const road is impassable, on account, oi the road over Porter's Pass being blocked. The Selwyu ford on the Bealev Road is also impassable. There is a road which cuts out Porter’s Pass, of which many are unaware. It is about eight miles long and runs from Lake Coleridge to Lake Linden, rejoining the main road at the western foot of Porter’s Pass. Af the present time, the road is merely a track, hut it has been traversed by cam. The secretary of the Canterbury Automobile Association, Mr J. S. Hawkes, has written to the Main Highways Board suggesting that this road should he put into passable condition, thus allowing an alternative route to th<» Coast. As Porter’s Pass is likely to he affected by changes of the weather, an alternative route is a necessity and it to l>e hoped that the road will he placed in a condition which will enable it to be used. If the Colerige-Linden road is made available for wheeled traffic it will mean a saving of sixty miles for motorists who are tonring to the Const from the south. By turning off at the Rnngitnta and following the Ttnknia Gorge route, the road is met with at Coleridge, thus cutting out. the trip to Christchurch.
