GERMAN PATENTS
BRoCESSES DISCOVERED. NF.AY YORK. Oct. 12. The discovery of sixty or seventy German patents for the mnmifaetnro of artificial silk, artificial cotton, and artificial wool, that had remained hidden among the list of 5000 patents controlled by the Chemical Foundations. Tiic. lias been made by the Synthetic Organic Chemical Alanufaeturers’ Association during the course of a search of these patent papers. Reports of these discoveries have been heard here since the recent chemical exposition.
T)r Charles TI. Hearty, president of the association, traced their discovery to nil investigation ordered a few months ago by the United States Tariff Comission. which detailed a representative to look up the patents for synthetic methanol, or wood alcohol. This effort met with such success in uncovering thirteen valuable processes that a systematic survey of the other patents was undertaken by the association.
“This rosaroh was begun last May,” Dr Hearty said, “ft was conducted by five patent experts, who were mem hors of the association. Before their investigation. our list of more than 0000 German patents presented a difficult problem to the searchers, because the patents were catalogued according to serial number, regardless of the industry they represented. The newly classified list was published in the middle of last August. It offers extremely valuable information to all manufacturers whose businesses arc at least To per cent. American-owned. It is a particularly important opportunity for all industries to examine the bulletin and see wlmt is available for their needs. A license for any one of those patents can he obtained for otto hundred dollars, and a small royalty on the output later. According to the policy of the Chemical Foundation, Inc., there will he no monopoly on am otto of these patents. Artificial silk is prominently in the public eye right now. Its manufacture is growing by leaps and bounds. Many beautiful colour effects are obtainable with its development, and the discovery of these new processes will undoubtedly give this business another great impetus.”
