NFW INDUSTRY FOR COAST
CHRISTCHURCH. Nov. 28. One of the most important developments in the coal industry is a proposal to establish, a line.* by-products works near Westport, which will manufacture by processes taken to England from Germany shortly before the war. A eompanv is being formed in which the estimated capital will he about £400.000. the greater proportion ot which will he English capital. The directorate will he a strong one. representative business men from many parts of New Zealand being included thereon. , It. is expected that the proposed works will treat 00.000 tons of coal a rear tho principal bv-produets l>oing a hieb-grade coal, sulphate of ammonia, benzol (petrol). and prepared tar. Other bv-produrts will he sheep du . naphtha, solvent and for making paints; naphthalene for preserving ‘kins- carbolic disinfectants; creosote for preserving timber; anthracene creases and pitch for electrical works. The estimated production of benzol is 180.000 gallons a year. The special system of manufacture is pursued in large industries in England. America. Germany. France and other countries. _
