HAILSTORM. IN W'*’i I.INGTON. WELLINGTON, November 27. An unusual hailstorm visited Wellington last evening, followed by heavy rain, hut it cleared up again in a few hours. GOLF HOUSE BURNT. GISBORNE. Novemter 20. Shortly before ten o’clock this evening. the Poverty Bay Golf (Tub’s clubhouse was totally destroyed by fire. The building included its professional quarters and workshop. It appears that under the heading of “Free Butter for Britain.” the “Daily Mail” published a cablegram from its correspondent at Christchurch as follow-: "Tlie New Zealand Dairy Produce Hoar*l has arranged for people in New Zealand to make Christinas gifts of butter to friends in Britain. Canons containing Tib of New Zealand butter will be delivered free to any address in Britain, with literature praising New Zealand enclosed in each carton, on which New Zealand produce will he freely advertised." Readers have evidently been misled by the headline and have not recognised that free delivery was dependent upon nomination and payment by friends in New Zealand. TIME ALLOWED TO PAY. AUCKLAND. Nov. 27. The City Council agreed to allow the Auckland Competitions Society time to pay the £22(1 for the hire of the Town Hall, the competitions having resulted in a toss of £877. The Society has adopted a scheme for paying its creditors (Is B*l in the pound. FAMILY’S NARROW ESCAPE. AUCKLAND. Nov. 27. A three roomed cottage in llnilston Avenue, Mount Albert, occupied by Mr Davis and family, was destroyed by lire at 2 o'clock tliis morning. Davis who is a qiiarryinaii, was living near his work at Penrose. The occupant- of the cottage. Mrs Davis and eight young children, on waking found escape by the door impossible. but site tore the front wall, which was made of sacking, and made a hole large enough to permit all to escape in their night attire, just, as the building collapsed. The Magistrate said but for the fact that defendant earned hi- living in the motor trade he would probably have cancelled his license. A YOUTH’S THEFT. CHRISTCHURCH, November 27. Graham I’itcaitldy, aged 22, admitted daring burglaries Irom city wafehottses in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. He was committed for sentence. In broad daylight Riteaithly entered Butterworth’s warehouse, stealing goods worth I*l3o. He then, with hat and coat off and carrying two tins full •of dusters, walked into the Kaiapoi Company’s warehouse and walked out with goods valued at C 24, hidden in the tins.

DEFENDANT FINED C2. AUCKLAND, November 27. Air Poynton. S.A!., delivered judgment in the action for defamation brought by Mr 11*11 Skelton (candidate for Roskill) against Henry Hastings Seabrooks, arising out of pamphlets issued during the election. The Magistrate said that taking the most charitable view, tiie statements in the pamphlet could not he regarded than as defamatory, but as the case was tl-e first under the Legislature Act, 1008. the defendant could be merely fined C2 on each charge and ordered, to pay costs. At vnSLAUGHTKR CHARGE. TATHAPE. Nov. 27. At the Police Court, a young single woman, a recent arrival from Ireland, was charged with manslaughter, and concealment of the birth ot a newborn male child, the body of which was found in a trunk in the girl's room at the home where she worked at Mangawiken.
The accused pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial on both charges bail being allowed on own recognisance and one surety of £IOO which was forthcoming. The inquest was held concurrently with tlr Court proceedings ami a verdict was returned that death was due to the severance of the umbilical cord and lack of attention thereafter.
