WELSH COBS FOR OTAGO
AUCKLAND. Nov. 24
There was a farm look about parts of the Maluuia when she drew alongside the Queen's Wharf this afternoon. ‘Mr J. Carrutliers, of Middlemareh, Central Otago, the noted horse breeder. was on board with a valuable consignment of horses, which hate arrived in the pink ob condition, thanks to a good trip and careful attendance. Mr Camithers, who has been away since last .Tune, went Homo with tho intention in the first place of selecting some suitable Welsh cobs, his idea being to provide New Zealand with .something suitable for stock and hill work on the big stations of the South Island. The Welsh toll is just the sort of thing wanted. Built not too high, with a strong constitution, plenty of bone and a short hack, the cob ks very suitable lor the job, and people interested in the .survival of man’s faithfid friend in the face of the omnipresent motor will welcome the arrival of Air Carruther’s pick. There are two mares both in loal to Ceitho Welsh Comet, said to be the best cob in Wales. The marcs arc Hawthorn Lille and Xoyaddwilymgwcn. As a matter of fact any horse that could rniTv a hanicap like the last named should be up to any weight in the field. They are both seven years old. The stallion is Grove Welsh Dragon, eight years old, and he, like tho mares, is of the old Welsh type, now so hard to secure. The mares stand fourteen hands high, and the .stallion is fourteen hands three inches. Air Carrutliers came across two very likely Clydesdale colts. yearlings, which are named First .Mate, bred by his father, Air Andrew Can-others, of Nethcrton. Auclienhcath. Lanark, and Boa liter, bred by Air F. Bainbridge, of Enfield Senator, Yorkshire. Air Carrutlicrs also has with him a two-year-old Clydosale stallion. Ray of Hope, for Air Alexnner Cullen, of Goodwood, Otago.
While lie was in AVales. Air Carrutliors purchased a collie of a splendid working strain of AA olslt hill dogs, and still another passenger is an Alsatian wolf hound, which is the properly of Miss Stewart, who is travelling with All- and Airs Carrutliers.
But even this docs not complete the list of stock, as there are two thoroughbreds under Air Carruthcrs’s care, a two-year-old filly named White Bird, for Air .). Hislop. of Auckland, and an unnamed filly, also a two-year-old. for Mr Donald, of Wostmorc, Wanganui. Finally there is a stud harrier, which has been imported by Mr Bullock Webster to improve the Auckland hounds. He is an aristocrat of his class, and comes of a champion strain.
