MAW HIGHWAYS BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Main ifiglnvays Hoard was held at Wellington on Thursday and Kriilay. Mr I'. M 'Tirkert presided. In pursuance of the policy of signoostincc main highways, and indicating ounty lioundaries, the Hoard proposed to make some arrangements with local authorities for the sign-postmg of bridges.

The tour of the South Island which the Board had intended making this month has bad to be postponed until January. The Hoard will probably start from Blenheim or Nelson about Januirv 15th, and work right down the •101 lth Island, including the West f 'oast. CONCRETE ROAD SUBSIDY. Considerable discussion arose out of the application of the local authorities between Otahuhu and Papakura for a. subsidy on a concrete road. In eonsc'ltience of a resolution passed by the Board at its last meeting, its engineer submitted a report as to Hie estimated cost of a bituminous concrete road which the Hoard had indicated it would subsidise. On consideration of this renort, the Boanl fixed a maximum on which it would pay its subsidy. Ibo •stimated cost per mile varies througli>ut, but oil the whole the Bard’s subiidy will lie paid on an average of npiroximately L'7500 per mile. ENG INER’S STATEMENT.
