TWO MILES OF WIRE FENCE DESTROYED.
NAPIER, Nov. 18. The Wairoa. correspondent of the "Hawke’s Bay Herald” reports that a few days ago two miles of new fencing near Lake Waiknremoana. erected partly its a boundary fence between the power house site and the properties of Carter Brothers and It. E. Nettle, valued at £IOO, was destroyed in a most- complete manner. The whole seven wires were cut at every post in the line and in some places between the battens also. The destroyer of the fence also cut the wires holding the anchors aL Hie angles on the level ground. The work of destruction was not only systematic and complete, but must have taken a considerable time to carry out, as there were over two thousands cuts made. Even with a powerful cutter the work must have taken hours. There are no elites as to who committed the act. £ I lo t A FOOT. I,AND IN QUEEN STR EFT. AUCKLAND. Nov. 18. Two valuable freehold properties were offered for sale by public auction on instructions from the trustees of the estate of the late Alfred Porter. Both properties failed to reach the reserve placed upon them, and were consequently passed in. The prinicipal property was a block with frontages of 49ft Giti both to Queen street and High street, the depth being slightly over |Soft. litis property is almost opposite Wyndham street, and until recently the ironmongery business of E. Porter and Company was carried on there. In offering the property the auctioneer remarked that, he was cutting out the buildings on the property, as they were not of much value. Bidding opened at £50.000. and progressed in £SOOO bids to £05.000, when interest slackened. Bids of £2500 were then accepted, and two offers carried the figure to C 70,000. There £IOOO bids brought the final oiler to £.2,000, at which figure the property was passed Jo. The price per foot on the £72,000 hid is £llsl.
RHODES SCHOLAR. AUCKLAND. Nov. 18. Air F. R. Leonard. B.Sr., of Auckland. who is in the last year of his medical course at Otago University, has been selected as the Otago nominee for the second Rhodes scholarship. A CRACK CADET COMPANY NELSON, Nov. 19. the .Minister of Defence was present at an inspection of the Nelson College Cadets, in connection with the competition for the RiddiTord Cup. which thev at present hold. The Minister said that he was just resigning the portfolio of Defence, and, hearing of Ihe inspection he had intimated liia desire to he associated with it. He had had several occasions of telegraphing congratulations on their past performances. Addressing the boys, lie said: "You have a great, school, and have turned out great men.” At the conclusion of t-lio inspection, Colonel Burgoss said that the Examining Board had expected a high standard, and they had not been disappointed.
