Is CAT LICENCES. LONDON, Sept. 2T The chief sanitary inspector of Edinburgh is to prepare a report on the subject of the licensing of cats. The matter was brought before the Public Health Committee of the town council iii a letter from the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, asking for the support of the town council for the Registration of Cats Bill. It was stated on behalf ol the society that the directors had for some years viewed wit it great concern the alarming increase in the numbers of stray, diseased. and unwanted cats in Edinburgh. Two uniformed women eat collectors are employed by the society solely on the work of collection of these animals. Last year the society dealt, with no fewer than 4,S6i’. of which more than half were strays. Most of them were diseased. This year the society has .destroyed 3.091 cats—stray, diseased, and unwanted. The Bill provides that chiefs or police should grant eat licences at Is each.
