AIILITARY FORCES. WELLINGTON, November 13. Financial instructions and allowance regulations for Hie New Zealand Alilitary Forces were amended in a Gazette notice published last night. The scale of fees payable to medical officers and medical practitioners tor attendance on and treatment and examination of members of the N.Z. Military Forces is defined, and it is specified that if any dispute should arise the decision of' general headquarters will be filial. 'While undergoing their obligatory annual training in camp, or at a a continuous course of instruction, medical officers and veterinary officers will receive as remuneration the pay and allowances aproprintc to their rank in the Territorial Force, and in addition to pay of rank, medical officers will receive a professional allowance of Cl Is per day.
Additional regulations provide that any person liable for training who claims exemption from training on the ground of medical unfitness will require to produce at his own expense a certificate signed by a registered medical practitioner (to be a member of the N.Z.ALC. where possible). Such claimant shall be entitled to a refund of the cost- of the certificate up to a maximum of 10s 0(1, providing it states that the claimant is medically unfit and specifies the nature and probable duration of the disability causing such unfitness, and providing further that total or partial exemption is granted as a result of the application. A F.O.H. CONTRACT. WELLINGTON, Nov. 13. Judgment was delivered yesterday morning by Air E. Page, S.M., in the ease of Burns, Philip and Co., Ltd., against T. E. Robinson, of Greymouili, hotel proprietor. The claim was for £lO 7s Id. for five eases of brandy, together with freight, delivered by plaintiff to defendant in Alarch last. Evidence showed that a traveller lor the plaintiff company had taken an ora! order for the eases, but no mention had been made of price, as the braiul.v was a tariffed line, and no arrangement lmd been made as to Hie method of delivery. Tim order reached the plaintiff company on Alarclt 3 and was acknowledged bv letter next day, advising that the goods would Ist dispatched by first shipping opportunity. Ike brandy was sent per s.s. Begulus on March 9. and according to plaintiff a printed advice note, invoice, and bill-ol-hiding for Hie goods were dispatched on the same day. The defendant denied receiving these documents. In May he complained to the plaintiff company that, two of Hie cases had been pillaged and refused to take delivery of such eases or to pay the price of the brandy uni iI an allowance was made. Counsel for plaintiff urged that, upon delivery by tiie plaintiff company to the shipper the risk passed to the buyer. whose remedy was against llie skipping company. The Magistrate held that the contract was one f.o.b. Wellington ami that the property passed to the buyer on shipment. Accordingly, he gave judgment for tlte full amount claimed, witli costs, amounting to £ll Os fid. CHAOS IN CHINESE LAUNDRY. AUCKLAND. Nov. 12. An explosion ol gas in Albert Street shortly before 8 o’clock lasl evening caused considerable damage to a Chinese laundry occupied by Hop Lee. The explosion shook nearby brick premises to a state of chaos. Two or three boards in the floor were lorn lip and many articles i" the room were displaced. Banes of glass oil the ground floor was .shattered. Two orexplosion oc-.urred lliore wore two Chinese on the premises, but apart from receiving a Iriglil they were unhurt . The art mil cause of the explosion is unknown, ft is concluded that escaping gas from an underground main was set alight bv a malch, either in t ln* premises or on the lootpalb. When officers of the. Gas Company arrived on the scene they discovered tlial llio main was leaking underneath the fooipaili in front, of Hie shop. SLRYTCES RECOGNISED. AUCKLAND, Nov. 10. The good work done by Sir .Tames and Lady Gunson will be publicly recognised next Monday, when a presentation ceremony will be bold at the Town Hall. Sir James will be presented with a silver model of the new museum building now being erected in Hie Domain as a war memorial. The model is true to scale and stands on a bronze pedestal. An illuminated address will also be presented to Sir .Tames and a baby grand piano to Lady Gnnson. The committee in charge of the presentation has decided, with tlie consent and approval of Sir Tames to devote the remainder of the funds to the establishment of a university scholarship in agriculture, to be known as the Sir .Tames Gunson Scholarship. For this purpose there is a sum of CT2OO available, which, itli the Government subsidy, brings the total to £2IOO. This means that the scholarship which will be open to New Zealand students, will be tenable at Auckland "University College. RTXE FOREST FIRE. NELSON, Nov. IG.
During a high south west wind, a young pine plantation, to the extent of three hundred acres on Afoutero Hills, was totally destroyed by fire. SLTNG BREAKING FATALITY. CHRISTCHURCH. Nov 17. Air Isaac Welsh, a married man aged 08 years, foreman for the Shaw Savill Company at T.yttehiton. was killed tonight. while working in the steamer Canadian Challenger. He was standing alongside No 3 lintc-h when a cargo sling broke, and a cask of pelts fell, striking him on Hie head and fracturing the base of bis skull. The deceased was highly esteemed in the port, especially by the watersiders who worked with him.
