[Australia A, N.Z. Cable Association. 1 A FIRE. SYDNEY, Nov. 18. A fire destroyed Joahanson and Matgreen’s factory at Waterloo. Extensive damage was done. The fire destroyed adjoining factories occupied by Humphrey proprietary Limited, carpenters and joiners, and the Reliances .Motor Body Coy. The damage is fifteen thousand sterling. steamer tragedy. PERTH, Nov. 18.
The master of the steamer Cogn, from Singapore brought details of the murder of Onpt. Murdoch McDonald, a New Zealander, master of the steamer [Clang, and eight members of liis coloured crew, by a Malay in Singapore Harbour. He stated that soon after the Kang left the berth, a Malay passenger ran amok with a largo knife, stabbing right and left. A scene of panic followed, 200 passengers rushing to escape the madman. The ship was stopped, but by that, time thirteen people had been stabbed. McDonald left the bridge to investigate and was stablied in the abdomen. The piolioe were signalled and a party armed with rifles and bayonets hoarded the vessel and the madman was shot dead. McDonald and eight others succumbed to their wounds. A tragic feature was the finding of an unloaded revolver and ammunition in McDonald's pocket. COAT, STRIKE SPREADING. PERTH. Nov. 18. The strike at the Collie Mines has sDread to the electricity plant and the town is in darkness. Officials are \\ (irking the pumps to keep the mines free from water. MKNTA L DEFECTIVES. SYDNEY. Nov. 18. The Inspector-General of Mental Hospitals., in his annual report- describes the situation in regard to mental defectives as serious.
