NEW OIL TANKER

THE MY. “OTOKJA.'’ LONDON, Oct. 7. The Otokia, twin-screw Diesel-driven oil tanker, has been built and completed, for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, having been constructed under the supervision of 31r \V. T. Tucker on behalf of the owners and Mr David Boyd, of Esplen, Son and Swainston, Limited, London. The vessel is built on the fshenvnod system of the longitudinal framing. The principal dimensions being: Length overall. -1 52 feet 3 inches; length b.p.. I:S7 feet. !) inches: breadth mid., 57 feet ; depth mid. to upper deck, 38 feet !) inches; deadweight. 10.850 tons; gross tonnage, 7277 tons; speed, 12 knots. The vessel has been constructed under

Lloyd's special survey, for the carrying of petroleum mid spirit in hulk. There are to pump rooms with pumps of extra large capacity, two of which are fitted in the alt room and one in the forward mom, all being controlled from the deck. The vessel has two masts and seven derricks, the two derricks on llie foremast are to Tift five tons each. There are two winches "in by I2in and one Bin by Min steam winch on poop deck, and there is also an II in by I .'Sin steam winlass on the forecastle deck. Accomodation is provided for a complement of 34 officers and crew, the officers being berthed amidships. The galley is oil fired and special heating and ho I water systems have been installed throughout all the accomodation. The propelling machinery consists of ■_> sets of single acting '2-cycle Diesel engines of the Sulster type, having a li.fi.p. of about fSOOO. The fuelling arrangements are sufficient to enable to Ira veil for a distance of about 18.000 miles, without rebuukoriug. The engine room auxiliaries are of ample size and number for all purposes, being steam driven, for which 2 auxiliary boilers have been fitted on the upper deck, above the main cross hunker. Duplicate generators have been fitted aft. one lieing a stand-by set of

the semi-Diesel type connected to an auxiliary compressor, and a 4 k.tv. generator has been fitted under tbo poop deck.
