THE DUNEDIN EXHIBITION.

THIS MORNING'S PROCEEDINGS,

[by TKI.KOIIArir —I>ER CHESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN. Nov. 17. Dunedin people breathed freely this morning when they found the, day for which they had waited in such anxiety breaking tine. A g.cniul sun shone out, though occasional fleecy clouds drifted over the sky, and through the streets there swept brisk gusts of wind to give a reminder that summer was not yet fully installed. This, however, failed to damp the spirits of the people, who early began to make towards the Exhibition and to the scene of the official opening of the new highway constructed from the railway station to the exhibition site.

The Hon G. Contes, as Minister for Public Works, officially declared the highway in commission at 10.30 and nt about the same time the ears began to run over the new tramway route to the big show.

The* City Council also lias a large fleet of motor buses in commission, so the problem of transport to tlie exhibition has been tackled in a manner that should prove thoroughly effective. The city observes a half holiday, and at noon the exhibition gates will be opened to the public. The Governor-General arrives at

2.30 to partieiate in tlio formal opening ceremonies, the speakers including Mr J. S. Hors, Chairman of the Exhihition Directors, the Prime Minister, and Mr Taplev, Mayor of Dunedin. In the evening the festival hall will be the scene of what should be an important milestone in the musical history of the city when the Exhibition Choir of four hundred voices will present Elgar’s "Dream of Gerontins.”
