The death took place at Westport on Saturday of Mr John Curtayne, one of the oldest pioneers of the Duller district. Deceased, who was Mil years of age, was a native of Killarney, Ireland, and had been over (it) years in New Zealand, the most of which lime he spent on the Coast. Jle followed goldmining and boating in the early days and was tit one time proprietor of an hotel. His wife predeceased him. He leaves a family of live sons ami three daughters.
To-day’s “ Argus” says:—A very painful accident overtook Mrs l,yall Sham! of Coal Creek, on Friday while, in the course of her domestic duties. Mrs Shiind was in the act of chopping some wood, when the axe which she was holding accidentally slipped, inflicting a severe gash upon her left hand slightly above the wrist. The lady was conveyed to the Hospital, where an operation was performed on Sunday, and where Mrs Shawl is recovering as well as can lie expected. It is anticipated that the patient will be permitted to return to her home tomorrow.
The gala day on Cass Square next Saturday is going to lie made specially entertaining by the presence of the Municipal Band which will render a special programme for the occasion. The appearance of the band will be most welcome. In order to facilitate the attendance of .members of the band and of employees generally, the Mayor is declaring, very kindly, a public holiday from 2 p.lll. to A p.m.. and no doubt the shopkeepers will take advantage of this arrangement to attend in force. Entries for the Baby Parade are now being received, and should be notified at the County (tffice without delay. Apart from this special feature for the ladies, there will during the afternoon, be a free demonstration of gas cooking on the grounds which should be of engrossing interest to those concerned.
The Westport "News" states:—At 0.30 o’clock on Sunday evening, as three young men, Shearer, Stanley Lainont and Murphy, were standing at tl e Post Office corner of Brougham and Palmerston street, a big slab o! concrete from the beading just under the dome of the' clock tower, loosened apparently by the earthquake on Saturday afternoon, fell on to the footpath. In its descent the slab struck a projecting portion of the tower and broke into pieces and one piece struck Earnout heavily on the chest, causing him to lose consciousness. The other two young men wore ills! missed by inches. They carried l.amont into the Post Office, where lie presently recovered, apparently none the worse for his critical experience.
