L’rom all accounts the very novel programme the Beautifying Society is putting forward for the Gala Day on Cass Square next Saturday week is going to attract much public interest. Tile Baby Parade in itself will ho a special attraction, and with the school teams’ competitions and the cookery demonstration, there should he that much variety that- the public will he well and richly entertained. A costume cricket match will he in progress during the afternoon, while the hand will render a special programme for the afternoon also.
In addition to awarding a special prize of a soveriegn to the lady securing most points with goods produced by gas cookery at the Beautifying- Society’s Cake Competition on Saturday week next on Cass Square it is the intention of the Hokitika (fas C'ov Ltd to give a cookery demonstration with gas appliances on the ground for the information and instruction of those using or desiring to use gas appliances for cooking. This should he a very novel feature. Gas cookers will he installed for the occasion and the effort is sure to attract the attention of all those interested in domestic life. The use of gas in the homes for cooking and heating purposes is growing more and more popular all over the world. There are many obvious advantages, and housewives are appreciating these very generally. The Gas Cooking Exhihition on Saturday week will therefore he very timely and interesting for all concerned.

The Municipal Band will render a programme on Cass Square on Sunday afternoon next, commencing at three o’clock.
A start was made yesterday with the erection of the new machinery for the Grey Electric Power Board’s power house at Dobson. The polos necessary for the Board’s reticulation scheme are now all landed and it is anticipated that the power will he available in Groymonth by next February.
The opening of the new Woodstock Hall will he celebrated on Wednesday evening next with a grand hall. Music will he supplied by I.awn’s Orchestra and an excellent supper will Ik.’ provided. The next evening (Thursday) a grand juvenile' fancy dress ball will lie held.
Alterations to tbe railway time-table come into force on Monday next. 'I be main alterations on the HokitikaGrey line are that the train from Hokitika. each morning will run later, leaving at 8.16 and arriving at Grey at 10.20 a.m. The train from Grey will leave at 7.66 a.in. and arrive at 9.26 a.m. In the* afternoons the trains leave five minutes later. On the Boss line the train on Mondays, Tuesdays. Wednesdays and Saturdays will leave Boss at 7.20 a.m. instead of 6.90 a.in. an alteration that should he very welcome. A proposal In use I he* telephone service for giving the public l:n* results of sports fix! iires other than raring, is under consideration by the Post and Telegraph Department. At a meeting of the Wellington Centre of the Xew Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, a letter was received from the Department stating that the proposal would require that the body concerned should
arrange for the results to he communicated to the telephone exchange by a responsible* person. It was agreed to co-operate with tin* Department and lo enquire whether it would lie possible to extend the scheme to allow the results of meetings in outside centres to he lomimmicated to the local exchange.
The ladies associated in regard to the sale of work being organised to assist the fund for the restoration ol tin* Methodist Church, badly damaged - i seriously by tiro, arc making great preparations for the benefit even! to lake place l at the Soldiers’ llall on the 26th and 26th inst. The hall has been i,laced at the disposal of the Methodist Church Committee hv the IDS.A.. and should prove to ho woll adapted lor a benefit of the nature proposed. Gifts of till kinds are being received of have been promised for the benefit, so that there will lie a wide variety of goods of all kinds. Each evening there will he a special musical programme, thus ensuring a pleasant entertainment for patrons. The event is one which is sure to appeal to the townspeople, while much spontaneous assistance is being offered from the country districts also.
Two Auckland youths have suffered blood noisoning in the List lew weeks as the result ol snider bites. In both cases, it is stated, the spiders were an imported species that arrived iu packages of goods. Accustomed from their experience with New Zealand spiders to regard the in-ei-t as a harmless thing, neither of the youths leafed any harm from the innocent-looking spiders that
came from abroad, due .ol them was bitten on the leg. and the other on the arm. The last mentioned was an employee 'if a firm of importers. He was unpacking a case of whisky when he noticed a nest of little spiders, like miniature daddy-long-legs, brown in colour, among the straw. Xol regarding them a- dangerous, lie allowed one at least to get on his arm; and the result, though it caused him no pain at the time, was a bite, similar to that of a mosquito, which soon caused a uaiulul swelling and led to a minor operation.
