BRITAIN’S UNEMPLOYED. LONDON, Nov. 10.
Mr Baldwin’s hopeful review of tho industrial situation yesterday is borne nit by the unemployment returns, which are consistently falling. They decreased by twenty-five thousand last iveelt. The unemployed now total twelve hundred and seven thousand. This total is twenty thousand below that for the same period last year.

The Finanre Committee rejected M. Painleve’s proposal to tax rents. Finally the Cabinet assembled and issued an uninformative communique.
Earlier in tbo evening tbo "Left” cartel conferred, and tried to get a semblance of unity. It adjourned to enable M. Malvy to see tbo Premier and recommend recasting proposals, hut M. Pa in love refused, declaring: “X am not going to run away. I shall fall, if necessary, on the battlefield.”
ADMIRAL HALSEY. LONDON. November 11. Admiral Halsey has, in connection with the Prince of Wales’s recent tour, been created a Txnight of the Order of the Grand Cross of St. Michael and St. George, and Piers Leigh, a Com■minder of the same order.

LONDON, Nov. 10. “The Times” city editor states that the underwriting is Itcing arranged for the Auckland Electric Power Board if a five per cent,. £2.50.000 loan at ninotv-eight. repayable in 1946. AUCKLAND. Nov. 11. The Auckland Electric Power Board’s loan of £250.000, repayable in 1946, bus been underwritten in London at £9B. the interest being 5 ]>er cent. This loan is the first instalment of a C 650.000 loan, authorised by the ratepayers last month, and will Ite spent nartly on materials in Enoglnnd and oartlv on labour costs hero.

Sir W. AlaeKinder. replying to Mr Holman’s appeal for better communication. said the Dominion had spent millions on some projects, hut should disburse a few hundred thousand as a subsidy for increasing shipping speed. His opinion was the the solution would lie that passengers should he carried by air. and goods conveyed by ships.
