A LIBEL ACTION. £IO,OOO CLAIMED FROM “TRUTH.” WELLINGTON, November 10. A suit for £IO,OOO damages for alleged libel was commenced in the Supreme Court to-day against the New Zen hid “ Truth.” tbe plaintiff being Alice Maud Ward, wife of Louis Wellington Ward, surveyor of Dannevirko. Tbe defendants named are Henry Lenata Clayton (publisher) and I'red Earle (editor) of “ Truth." Ihe alleged libel was an article entitled, “ Alice Where Art Thou.” published on 2nd February, in which plaintill was Teferred to as a lady notorious for her bombastic and pummelistic tendencies, and as having established a reign of terror in Dannevirko. Tbe defence admitted publication, but denied that the report was false and malicious, and that it consisted, in part, of tbe report of judicial proceedings and in part of comment oji the proceedings, and plaintiff's’behaviour and conduct during the proceedings. Plaintiff is now giving evidence. The- case is before Justice MacGregor and a jury of twelve.

OBITUARY. HASTINGS, November 10. Obituary.—James Bell, aetat 70. He arrived in New Zealand in Q 867 and was appointed manager of the Hillerstion estate. Wairnu . Valley, Marlborough. In 1822, on the death of the owner. Thomas Carter, be became managing trustee of the estate which was acquired by tbe Government for closer settlement in 1913. The late Mr Bell came to Hawke’s Bay in 1909 and purchased tbe Waipunoa Station (Eskdale). Later be purchased Twyford and the Apiey estates and finally Turamoe. where bo died. For many years he was president of tbe Marlborough A. and P. Society and was acknowledged one of the foremost judges of slock and land m tbe Dominion.

TOBACCONIST RAIDED. HAMILTON, Nov. In. A raid Ity tbe police on several premises resulted in the appearance <*f a tobacconist. Charles Jackson, and Selby Robson, at tbe Magistrate’s Court in answer to charges of using their respective premises as common gaining bouses. Both wore remanded 1i 11 Monday, ball heimr allowed in each case, self in £IOO and one surety of £lO3.
