TASMANIAN TIMBER INDUSTRY. HOBART, Nov. 10.
The outlook for the Tasmanian timber industry is gloomy. The firm of the John Hay Proprietary Limited has ceased operations, rendering idTo throe hundred employees. It is expected that other firms will also close, causing a complete- cessation of the industry. Hays explains the action is the result of the. poor market, tho heavy importation of cheap foreign timber, and the exorbitant claim of the timber workers’ union, which made it imixisxiblc to operate a timber mill in Tasmania- except at loss.
