THE EXHIBITION MEMORIAL.

The memorial to mark the West Coast Exhibition, held in 1923-1924, to celebrate the opening of the Hast and West {.'oast Railway, and the Diamond Jubilee of the Province of Westland. was completed yesterday by Mr H. A. Thompson, who had the contract for the work referred to. The memorial has been erected in M aeandrow Square at a commanding point where the statue overlooks the position of the former entrance to the Exhibition building. The figure is an allegoral one of “Summer.” and is in marble set on a concrete base. The statue is of appropriate elevation, and adds to tbe attractiveness of the surroundings in the well-kept garden grounds. It is a pleasant style of memorial well befitting its position, and adds another notable monument to those for which Hokitika has already a; very enviable reputation. The memorial is the gift of Mr !). Evans, lion secretary of the late exhibition, to the town. It is intended to hand the statue over to the civic authorities for their future care and upkeep. The gift is one which marks a very notable and interesting event in the, history of the town and district and will lie a useful reminder for all time of the important occasions it was reared to mark.
