The result was clearly a justification of the position taken up by the Association, and was an encouragement to prosecute, their efforts. They have every reason now to expect that Parliament will seriously take in hand the long overdue task of passing effective measures to reform the licensing laws. Me was satisgod that such action was earnestly desired by a far larger number of electors than those casting their votes for State Purchase and Control. He held that Parliament in framing legislation was bound
to give careful consideration to thi proposal for corporate control. The re
ommendat ion by the Parliamentary ommittee for consideration of Govern-
ment and the passage of reforming legislation would clear the way for a Policy of true Christian temperance, hitherto overshadowed by the concert trillion on Prohibition.
SUSPICIOUS AFFAIR. Mil AKA TANK. Nov. 0. On Saturday afternoon Constablt C’list, of Taneatua. received an urgent call from Waimana. On arrival ho found some kind of disturbance had taken place, as a result of which Mrs Robert Collier had been removed to Opotiki Hospital, where she later died. Her husband stated she got into a temper and started to burn tilings up. Her garments caught fire and she was severely burned. Both husband and "ife are half ca-tes, and wore only married recently. Further inquiries are being made and an inquest opens la-morrow.

CHILD RUN OYER. OTAKT, Nov. 9. AVhilo riding a tricycle on the footpath, the little daughter of D. C. Kawkhius. was run over by a horse and cart, receiving terrible injuries to the head. She was removed to the hospital and the latest reports stated there was a slight improvement.
MAORI WOMANS DEATH. .OTAKI. Nov. 9. A voting Maori woman. Tae Kollier. died in the hospital last evening from shock, caused by Imrns. After ail argument with her husband the woman twice set fire to her clothing. The husband on each occasion put the fire out.
HEADMASTER SUICIDES. AUCKLAND. November 9. The body of Charles Thomas Edwards, headmaster of the Mercer School, was found in the washhouse yesterday with his head badly shattered by a gunshot fired through liis mouth. He left a note indicating suicide. Edwards was sixty years of age and ulimarried and hail been a teacher in the Mercer School for forty years. CAR GOES OVER BANK. HA AVER A, Nov. .9.
A car driven by E. Rierc-e. of Kakarainea, and containing four passengers, went over the hank at Manutahi Gorge late last- night, falling about forty feet. Pierce was hospitalled at Patea, suffering a broken thigh and injuries to his chest. Two other passengers, O’Grady and Miss Holden were also hospitalled suffering from shock.
