EVERYBODY?. PICTURE!. GLORIA SWANSON—-MONDAY. Glora Swanson spent several strenuous days in preparation for her latest Paramount picture “ Manhandled.” She worked a day in one of New York’s largest department stores to get a line on how shop girls think and act. That is. she worked almost a day before the other girls in the store recognised her, despite the blonde wig and dark glasses she wore for a disguise. When Miss Swanson was recognised there was no work done for the rest of the day at the notion counter, and the store management, in order to prevent a near riot, had to get her out the back door as quickly as possible. In t lie picture Miss Swanson plays the role of a shop girl, who climbs the false social ladder of success, getting silks and furs, only to find that in the end honest love is the best policy. After her experience in the department store. Miss Swanson addeil another equally picturesque adventure to her preparation for the part. She ate several meals in a Bronx hoarding house, the kind that is pictured in “ Manhandled.” To cap the climax of her work in getting atmosphere for the picture she picked the rush hour to take her first subway ride in New York. She fought the crowd at Times Square, followed the green line assiduously and did everything the underground commuters do twice a day in a big city. “1 got the biggest thrill out 01 the subway,” declared Miss Swanson, when she returned to the-studio to begin work. “ The experience in the department store was novel, and 1 enjoyed it. So was the hoarding house, but neither one of them could compare with the subway. A good comedy and the famous “ Light and Win ” series complete a line programme. On Wednesday next the world's greatest athlete Fred Thomson and his almost human horse “ Silver King,” in “The Silent Stranger” will he presented for one night only. On Thursday next Beaumont Smith’s great Australian production “ The Digger Earl,” featuring the Sentimental Bloke (Arthur Tauchertl. which is the best of all the Australian pictures.
