DESCRIPTION OF R.aCE. (Received this day at. 1(1.0 .in.) SYDNEY. Nov. I
The “Herald” commenting on the race for the Melbourne Cup says: “Rounding the turn Alanfred forged ahead and led into the straight, hut in the next half furlong AA’indhag caught up and inside the furlong had Alanfred beaten. There was no mistaking the brilliance of the win. Afanfred ran a good rare lull on reaching the straight began to tire. Pilliwinkie was a good honest horse throughout, hut on the day Windbag was the master from the half-mile. Only once, in 1894, has his performance been eclipsed.
The “Telegraph says’’ at the halfmile it was apparent Alanfred, AA'indluig and Pilliewjnkie had the rest of the field outclassed passing the two furlong jiost. The opinion was that Manfred’s light weight would enable him In win hut Windbag’s magnificent staying powers wore overlooked. It
was a great race and no excuse can he offered for the defeat of Alanfred and Pilliewinkie, who went down to a hotter horse.
