George Farrow had a narrow escape from death in the flames which destroyed his home at 4(52 Selywn Street, early this morning. The fire was discovered about 3 o’clock by a neighbour. who gave tin alarm. Farrow did not know of the outbreak until tho Brigade arrived. The house is a sixroomed one and was valued at. £’GO(), and was insured for £-100.
HANDLING DIRTY CARGO. LYTTELTON, November 2. , A further meeting of the Local Disputes Committee was held this morning at Lyttelton to consider the watersidors’ demand of 3s 3d per hour plus IV)S bonus for discharging 700 tons of phosphate now on hoard the Wongan.dlo, which vessel was loaded at Nauru. The employers, it was stated, would not tieeede to the demands of the men, but were prepared to pay the award rates of 2s 7MI an hour. No trouble has been experienced at other ports in. obtaining labour to work this class of
cargo. A deadlock was arrived at during the meeting, and the matter wiU he again referred to the National Disputes Committee.

Two writs were sworn to-day under the Legislature Act against Henry Hastings Seabrook, President of the Roskill Branch of the Protestant. Political Association, in respect of alleged defamatory statements contained in a circular regarding Mr Hall Skelton (Liberal candidate) and also Roskill
electors, as being grossly false and untrue, and as being calculated to inllucnce the votes of electors. The first claim is for the alleged issue of the circulars, and the second is for alleged publications of another document bearing ltis signature as President of tho branch.
The writ is being issued for £SOOO damages against both the signatories, and the printers of the same document

ASHBURTON, Nov .2. Leonard James Probble, aged five, only son of Air and Airs D. Prebble, of Afount Somers, died in the County Hospital this morning from burns and shock. The child, while playing at home about mTd-day yesterday, fell into a bucket of boiling water and re reived terrible scalds. AN APOLOGY DEMANDED. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 3. The Mayor of Christchurch, the Rev. ■T. K. Archer, has sent the following telegram to ATr AY. D. Lysnar, Independent Reform candidate for Gisborne : “I hereby demand within 24 hours .on the platform and in the press, a withdrawal and an apology for your false statements concerning myself.’’ It is alleged that Air Lysnar quoted the Rev. Archer as saying lie would rather pray for a weasel than for the King.
