LATE LOCALS.

I!ev. Father Clancy, who was for -anile time stationed at Hokitika, writing to a local friend ti'oni Paignton, .South Devon, England, stated he had preached there being introduced as a missioner from New Zealand. Hedwelt for a considerable time on God's Ov.n Country. At the conclusion of his address there were enquiries from several people with friends in Hokitika.

Many friends throughout the district will hear with deep regret of the ,loath of Mr John Giese. of Hampden Street, which took place this morning at Westland Hospital after an illness extending over two weeks. He was taken suddenly ill while attending a picture entertainment and was removed to the hospital in a serious condition, which terminated fatally as stated. Deceased was a native of Beechworth. Victoria, and was 64 years of age. He came to Hokitika when a lad. and at an early age joined the stall' of the firm, which has continued ever since under the present name of Paterson. Michel and Co. Ltd., and of which lie has proved a valued and trusted member up to the time of his death.

Mr Giese took a great interest in horticulture and was a prominent member „f the Hokitika Horticultural Society. \ quiet inoffensive man. lie made many friends during his life-long residence here, who will deplore his passing. Deceased leaves a widow and two daughters (Mrs Eyre, of Devon port. Vueklaml, and Miss Marie Giese of Hokitika), one brother (Mr .Tames Giese of Hokitika) and three sisters in Victoria. The funeral takes place on "iindav afternoon.
