BOWLING.

OPENING OF SEASON. The Hokitika Bowling Club opened the season on Saturday afternoon under pleasant weather conditions, when there was a good attendance of players and a large number of visitors. The green looked well and played nicely though still somewhat soft after recent rains. Afternoon tea was provided by Mosdamos Stevenson and Thompson, and was fully appreciated. Mr It. Stevenson (President) • ill declaring the season open, extended a welcome to the visitors, and expressed his pleasure at seeing some now faces among the players. He hoped the season would prove an enjoyable one to all. At his call Mrs Stevenson rolled up the first howl (a toucher) amidst applause, and the season was declared open. Later, during the tea adjournment the President presented tlie Duncan Cup to Mr If. Thompson, winner of the singles championship for last year (the second year in succession). congratulating him on his success. Mr Thompson acknowledged the good wishes, and wished that more of the older players, as well as the younger ones would compete for the annual trophy. A round of applause concluded the ceremony. The annual opening game then took place sides being chosen by the President and Vice President. resulting in a narrow win by three points by the President’s side.
