BOGUS SWEEPSTAKES
A SYDNEY All REST. [Australia it N.Z. Cable Association._ (Received this day at 11.25 a.m.i SYDNKY. Oct. 11. The police detained a man and a woman as they were leaving tin 1 past office with a la roe number of letters trom New Zealand containing a la roe amount of money for tickets in a boons sweep which they allegt the man Is conducting. The police state the man sent hooks ol liekt-Ls to people in towns all over New Zealand, with a letter explaining how the .sweep was to he run. The sweep was on the New Zealand Cup, run at C'hristehureh in Novemhor. and was called the New Zealand Sweepstake and the prize money totalled £10,0(10. the first prize being £SOOO It is believed thousands of liekets were sold all over the Dominion, the promoter explaining the tickets were to he sold exclusively in New Zealand. The reason the lottery was run from Sydney "as owing to the postal difficulties in New Zealand and agents were instructed to tonvard all money for tickets hy postal note only, cheques or money orders not being acceptable. The police state it is remarkable that the promoter was aide to organise such an illegal lottery in New Zealand and control it Irom Sydney and make it such a success. When the police detained the man there were a number of New Zealand newspaper clippings in his mail showing that the sweep had aroused considerable iuteres.t. One paper under the heading “Doubtful Sweep” described the way the lottery was run. and another paper stated the o|H?rations of certain sweep promoters in Australia wore suspicious.
