" The prices in Now Zealand ot the staple commodities of export such a.s dairy-products am! meat are detcrminoil by London prices, less the cost of shipping, deterioration of value through impairment of quality on the voyage, etc.," states the Abstract. "Ir is interesting to note in this connection that the dill’etences between the \ew Zealand and London retail prices are much less in the ease of dairy-products than in the case of the more bulky I meat. The paragraph ernes on to state that Wellington is cheaper than London, C ape Town, Sydney or Melbourne lot potatoes, tea. sugar. butter, cheese, and beef, though the Australian cities are cheaper for mutton. On the other hand, in none of the cities mentioned are bread and (lour dearer than in Wellington. " Milk and bread.” it is stated, "are astonishingly low in London.’' but it is pointed out that as on the date of the compilation of the table from which these observations wore made summer prices for milk wore prevailing in that city, while winter prices were being charged in all the other cities mentioned. The same omumstames, it is staled, will account for the. relatively low price of eyys (Is p,| a doyen) in London, as compared with L’s d.'pl a dozen in Wellington. Milk is stated to have been bringing 7ld a quart in Wellington while the London price is given at ojd a quart.
