HEAT WAVE AT SYDNEY SYDNEY. Oct. 12

Erom Si at L o'clock in the morning, the thermometer climbed to 93 in the afternoon. this being accomplished by ti hot wind of almost a gale force. Tin: city was smothered in dust and smolu from numerous hush fires in the outei suburbs. Later in the day. the thermometer fell with a rush. The gale lias unroofed and damaged many houses in the suburbs. Several vessels In the harbour dragged their anchors, but small damage was done. The wind played a scurvy trick on the competitors at the rifle-meeting, wrecking their canteen. DOUBLE TRAGEDY. SYDNEY. Oct. 12. The lmshnnd of Mrs Parr. whose death was cabled to-day, is employed at Tmnworli. Anderson was a married man with five children. The evidence uf their families showed the two victims had been keeping company for sonic year.-. They supposedly quarrelled. and Anderson struck .Mrs Pair on the bead with a bottle, and shot her twice. Then he drank strychnine, and shot himself. El RES -THEN FLOODS. SYDNEY. October 13. Yesu-rdny's storm swept a large portion of New South Wales and parts oi Central Australia and Southern (Queensland. It caused widespread damage .to property, interruption to the telegraph services, and damage to the crops. The wind carried the line dust hundreds of miles, casting lurid shades over the country. In Sydney then- were torrential rains which Hooded Hie lowlands, but served Inc purpose of extinguishing the bush fires which were raging in the suburbs.
There were many narrow escapes from falling debris. One bouse at Vaueiiise was struck by lightning and partially demolished. The inmates were burled in ‘The ruins, one being slightly injured.
During the height, ol the gale the township Charlestown. near Newcastle, was completely surrounded by bush fires, and this town was saved only after a desperate si niggle. A ROY'S DEATH.
