The steamer M.ontoro brought 2) tons of crude petroleum from Timor Island for assay. It is tiie property of the Timor Petroleum Company of Melbourne. The Company’s representative stales that twenty-five prospecting shafts have been sunk and all contained oil. The crude petroleum was baled out with kerosene tins. All indications are that extensive oil deposits will he tapped. PAPER MILLS PROPOSAL ABANDONED. HOBART, October 8, lion Mr I.lyon, the State Premier, has received a letter from the Amalgamated Zinc Company, stating that its proposal to establish the paper pulp industry in Tasmania has now lieen abandoned as the Commonwealth Government's offer of four pounds sterling per ton liountv for paper manufacture is not satisfactory. The company sought a bounty of six pounds. NORWEGIAN WHALERS FOR N.Z. HOBART, October S.
