An inquest was held Ibis afternoon into the circumstances surrounding tile death of .John .McCormack, an elderly man who was found lying at the foot of the stairs of his home last night. Mr .McCormack fractured his skull when he fell. A verdict of accidental death was returned. MAN INJURED. OHAKUNK. Get. 9. T. Webb, employed in the Government quary at Ohakime Junction, was injured by a fall of debris and sent to Taihape Hospital in a critical condition. Several ribs are broken and there is a severe injury to bis bead. QUEENSLAND FINANCE. BRISBANE, Oct. 9. The annual report of the AuditorGeneral, tabled in the Assembly, shows the State Public Debt is now £97.001,712. The revenue last financial year was £11,897,250 and surplus £16.907. SFPBE.ME COURT. CHRISTCHURCH. October 9. At the Supreme Court, John Wilmot Kink, for obtaining money under false pretences was sentenced to one year’s hard labour. Richard Edward Ellis on 38 charges of forgery and the issue of valueless cheques in various parts of New Zealand received three years’ imprisonment. .Manuel Vnlvoi for escaping from I’aparua Prison received a further year’s detention. He is now serving two years for theft. Cyril Louis Walter Withell for obtaining credit by fraud, reformative treatment for two years. INSTITUTIONS BENEFIT BY £12,009 WANGANUI. October 9. By the will of the late James McGregor £12,0(10 is bequeathed to tho local institutions, the To Am Orphanage, the Hospital and Beautifying Society each receiving one third subject la the life interest of the widow. SAMPLE ROOMS BURGLED. CHRISTCHURCH. Get. S. A burglary as committed at Somerset sample rooms last night. Wearing apparel, mostly women's wear, to tlic value ot. £4O or £SO was stolen the property consisting of samples belonging to tlic Kaiapoi Woollen Company. As there is no indication bow entry was effected it is surmised a duplicate key was used.
I’A PA RCA PRISONER ESCAPES. CHRISTCHURCH. Oct. 8. Charles ||. A. Jones, who was sentenced to three years' imprisonmeni for forgery on June 21th. 1924. escaped from Paparua prison to-day. lie has lot yet been recaptured, but it was reported to-night that lie was seen nulling toward, Kiroarton.
