SHIPPING TROUBLE.

Forty-eight firemen and twelve seamen from the steamer Sue vie on arrival at -Melbourne from England, decided to join the strike. MELBOURNE, October 2. The British steamer Pakipaki sailed with a full crew, but the crew of the Port Adelaide joined the strikers. ORVIETO AT .SYDNEY. SYDNEY, October 2. The Orvieto has anchored in the stream. She will not be brought to the wharf in order to avoid possible intimidation of the eiew bv strikers. The cartel is being worked in the stream. The Orvieto is regarded as a test snip on which the result of the strike may hinge. If she can complete the round trip the failure of the strike will have been proved. CHAMBER OE COMMERCE ATTITUDE. DUNEDIN, October 2. The follow ino telegram was dosdatehed to the Premier this afternoon : “The Executive of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce appreciates your efforts to effect a settlement of the shipping difficulty, and, failing an early and satisfactory conclusion, undertakes to support the Government in tiny action that may be decided upon
in the interests of the community.” -MOVEMENTS AT THE CAPE. CAPETOWN, October .'in. The Ceramic sailed, and all the Union Castle liners have now got away from Capetown. The Athloform. which was strike-bound at Durban, and whose captain committed suicide owing to strike troubles, has sailed with a volunteer crew. The dock police have been strengthened to prevent the molestation of the men seeking to join the vessel.
DEPORTATION BOARD. (Received this day at. 8 ii.m.l SYDNEY. Oct. .1. At the Deportation Board hearing, the seamen giving evidence on behalf of Walsh declined to answer questions put by Counsel lor the Commonwealth, stating they would only reply to questions put by the Board. 'l’lie Chairman said the position was most unsatisfactory, but the Board was powerless. All it could do was to repeat the questions asked by the Crown.
