Notices were immediately placed on the destroyed bridges telling the length of time occupied, the material used and where it was obtained. It was round Whitchurch that the | battle first- developed. j A small force of Mercians was bidding the railway, and theoretically, had blocked the road. A little later a Wessex cavalry patrol, trotting along a road, was encaged hv the Mercian" with Lewis cun fire and forced to return for safety. Thereupon the battle developed, armoured cars, machine-guns, reinforcements. aeroplanes and tanks lieing engaged. " The ‘planes flew at- a terrific pace, and scarcely 100 feet above the railway embankment. The tanks were so perfected that thov travelled more speedily than ever before. jt was described by one critic as war on a .speedier scale. The conditions were most uncomfortable. It will 1.-e four days before the result of the battle is known. Field-Marshal Far! Tfaig is following the struggle.
