The Board met at Christchurch on Friday last. Present—. Messrs 'l'. Hitches (chairman). 11. J. Bignell. R. Wild, W. Johnson, C. S. Thompson, E. H. Andrews. J. W. Uow, AY. H. Winsor. G. AY. Armitage, J. Maze and W. A. Banks. APPOINTMENTS. Appointments continued included: — Bruce Bay. .Mr R. S. Parr, sole teacher; Kumara. Miss Al. Al. Smith, assistant mistress; Taylorvillo. .Miss \. A. It was resolved to .send a letter to the relatives expressing the Imard’s regret. A circular letter was received trom the Department regarding the excessive employment of relieving teachers. It was resolved to approve of the secreini'v's reply, pointing out Hint the employment of tile relieving teachers mentioned was unavoidable under present conditions. Mr Alaekay. attendance officer for the West Coast, reported having visited ten schools, interviewed eight parents. sent out notices to eleven and taken court proceedings against four, maximum penalties being indicted in each ease. With regard to a proposal to create an interest in forestry among school children it was agreed that an implication should he made to the City Council fur the use of twenty acres for planting out with forest trees by some eight or ten schools in the city and suburbs; also, so that the system of planting forest trees in connection with schools should l:e regular and continuous. it was agreed that tin application should he sent to the Government for the use of.sav JOO acres in the Waimairi County. A letter was received from the llokilka committee requesting that. the Railway Department he asked to grant free railway passes to pupils attending examinations away trom their homes, li was resolved to send information regarding the number of ennddates required to warrant an examination cent re. A letter was received from the Canterbury branch of the British Medical Association regarding provision lor children who are compelled to he away from school for four months, owing to infections from ringworm. It was resolved to reply that it would not he feasible to institute special classes aft suggested. Air M. AUbeod. who was recently appointed senior Inspector of Schools lor the Canterbury district, in succession to Mi- AY. Brock, was formally welcomed by tlie Board. For many years Air AT Leal was a teacher in the South Canterbury district and then he was appointed a junior Inspector in the Auckland district. At the time of his present appointment he was senior Inxpector in Hawke’s Bay. AIR JOHNSTON'S REPORT.

Barrytuwn anil Awaitma. The Committees at Rtinanga and Barrytown have do.if splendid work improving t heii school grounds by levelling and plant ing. 1 have procured the supply ol seeds for t.hG season locally at a price a good deal lower than last year. A report was received from air Wild who had been deputed to visit the district in regard to the Committee's propositi to dispose of the timber on the school reserve. Arthur's Pass.- A letter was received from the New Zealand Railway Depariniciil advising that so tar as it is Coiicerneil there is no unison for (lie retention of the school. It was resolved to apply for tin- Department’s permission to dispose ol the school and resilience. Jack's .Mill.— An application was received from the Committee tor the erection of a small residence tor the teacher and it was decided to approach the Department for a grant for this purpose. Maintain.-—A report was received from Mr Wild regarding the disposal of the old school building. Ii was resolved lo inform Mr Condon that if a more reasonable oiler than C2 were not forthcoming the Hoard would not consider telling the school. Moana-Ruru.— A report from Mr 11. .1, Rignall. who had been deputed to select a suitable site for the proposed new school midway between Munna and Ruru. was received and adopted. It was decided to apply to the Lands Department for b acres out of Section 'jsp[, Experimental Plot. Moana. and if successful, to approach the Department for a gran: for the erection of the desired school. Creymonth Workshop.—A complaint was received from Mr d. Cody regarding the burning ol rubbish at the Workshop, and it was resolved that necessary steps he taken to abate the nuisance. forest Tree Culture.— In accordance with the resolution passed at last
meeting of the Board a copy of tho circular submitted by Air Banks was sent out to the Chairman of every School Committee in the district. The following AA'est Coast reply hits so far been received. Kumara—Half an acre of land available in the vicinity ol the school. AA’ould have to bo fenced. Committee has no funds lor this purpose. Two thousand acres education reserve recently worked out by sawmill. AA'EST COAST. Blackball.—A renewed application was received from the Committee lor the installation of a hot water service in the headmaster’s residence. It was resolved to inform the Committee that the Board cannot recede from its previous decision, viz., that the only assistance that can he given is by way of a B for C subsidy on voluntary contributions. AVaitahi.—A letter was received from the teacher covering memorandum from Department in regard to payment of hoarding allowance, the teacher having reported that the residence is quite unsuitable lor occupation. 1 1 was dociilcil to again approach the Department for authority to convert the residence into a shelter shed and to pay house allowance to the teacher. The Foreman’s report for the month was received and adopted:—■ Ivokiri.—Repair of fences tB12); provision of two new ou’t offices < B2II) : provision of a new wash-basin and removal of hell tower authorized. Hokitika.—Repairs at caretaker's residence ' B 12) ; Chimney aL caretaker’s residence (BIN); painting tit carelaker’s residence (CIS); authorized. Hokitika.—l’ainting and varnishing at school (Co): painting main corridor :it school (Cf); authorized. Blaketown. —Application to he made to Department for a grant of Bl(>2 for improvement ol ventilation and lighting of school. Runattgn. Consideration ol application from Al iss (). \\ . Newport lor transfer to a North Canterbury school wax delerreil. Okarito. An application for the reopening ol this School, to take tin' place of Okarito Forks, was referred to the Department with a view to giving institution to the pupils by correspondence. Kakapolabi-l’tikekura. —Correspond once was received regarding the suggested removal of the Rukeknra School to the Big AYaitaha. Consideration was deferred pending receipt ol detail'd information asked lor. Mr Bigih'll and Mr AYild to visit and report. Evans’ Creek.—Renewed application was made lor establishment ol a school. It was resolved to send tor more detailed information.
