LABOUR COUNCIL’S LETTER. SYDXI3Y, Sept. 17. The Commonwealth Labour Council has sent a further letter to tho Oversea Sin] ping Representatives’ Association, slating that in view of tho potentialities of a very disastrous and far-reaching industrial upheaval contained in the present seamen’s dispute. which if not settled, must inevitably and almost immediately involve all the industries associated in any way with oversea transport, the Council was surprised and disappointed with the Association's refusal to meet in conference for the purpose of attempting to arrive at a settlement. Its refusal leaves no oilier inference-, than that the Asoeiation has decided to close the door to any negotiations with a view to a constitutional settlement of the* dispute*. The letter concludes: “If this is so, the Labour Council regrets the necessity of being compelled to meet tho Association's policy of direct action with one oi a similar character; hut if the Association desired to meet tho Council later, it could eomniunieato with Mr .T. Garden, the Secretary of the Common wealth Executive appointed T>y the council to administer its decision. LONDON, Sept. IG. The unofTicial Strike Committee held a mass meeting at the Public Hall at Oannington. at which representatives of Amalgamated Central Marine workers violently resented Mr Harris’ manifesto. cabled yesterday. Mutual accusations of “liar.” “blackleg,” and “traitor.” were interchanged. Tho meeting only served to widen the breach existing between tlic unofficial Strike Committee and the Marino ■Workers.
