SHIPPING TROUBLE.
[Australia it N.Z. Cable Association.] DEMANDS EXTENDED. SYDNEY. Sept. I. A last-minute attempt to .settle tho shipping strike to-day. proved futile. An Arbitrator met the Strike Committee at the Trades Hall, and asked that, the men's decision not to return to work he reconsidered, lie was informed that the owners' terms were considered quite unsatisfactory, and that the British seamen were now asking in addition to their original demands, for the Australian rates of pay and conditions, namely, the eight hour day and the ‘lB-hour week ; payment for all overtime; payment for sickness; and also, in the cases where British seamen are paid off at Australian ports, full pay until they are landed again at. their home ports.
The Secretary of the Strike Committee staled that the members ot tho Committee expected to he prosecuted, inirl so an alternative Committee has been appointed to carry on. if tho need arises.
