Court to-day. John "Hums and Co., Ltd. claimed £7731 damages from tin! e.;\ ners of the ship Westland for loss on the consignment due to alleged deterioration of the wire in ship--1 ment. Tt. was not denied that the - wire was received on hoard in good 1 condition, and when landed at Auck--1 land was corroded. 1 Plaintiffs contended that this was due to the effects of caustic soda. For the defence it was maintained that the wire had been exposed to moisture just before shipment in America., and that this was not manifest at the time of the receipt of cargo. Rust set in during the carriage on the ship, although every precaution was taken in the stowage. The Court reserved its decision. .MENTAL PATIENT "DROWNED. TE AWAMUTU, August 30. A drowning fatality occurred yesterday afternoon. Henry Thorn, aged I it), an inmate of the Mental Hospital nt Toknnui losing liis life in Puniii River. Thorn was working in the hospital grounds with members of a gang clearing the hanks of the stream of scrub and noxious weeds, when a splash was hoard and Thorn was missed. The river runs very strongly there and the hank is covered with a heavy growth. A search was made hu’i no sign of Thorn was seen. Warder Churchfield dived in hut had to abandon the search owing to cramp. The bank was patrolled till nightfall and dragging operations commenced this morning, but so far without result. A SUICIDE.
