Howard James Thomas, an ex-rchool- | master, pleaded guilty to seven charges of intent to defraud by issuing valueless cheques, the amounts involved being £l7. Tho police, slated that, in addition to the present charges, other cheques had been issued, representing, all told, £SO 15s. It, was a case of npennig a small hanking account, and obtaining a cheque hook, and issuing cheques. Accused hitherto had borne a good character, hut was living apart from his wife, and came under the spell of another woman. Many of the cheques issued were for the purchase of this lady’s goods. Accused was admitted to probation for 12 months, on condition that he made restitution. KNOCKED DOM'N BY MOTOR. AUCKLAND, Aug. 31. There was a head on collision between cars driven by M’. Andrew and M. Somerville at the intersection of I’anmuiv and Otahuhii roads. Andrew’s car was forced through a stone v.all. the rear part hanging over a Chinese garden. Both cars were considerably damaged. M’atkinson, earpal knowledge, five years on one charge and two years on the second, the sentences to he cumulative, the Judge regretting that he could not order a Hogging. AVil 1 inm John Cameron for Llieft, 2 years reformative treatment. Arthur Godfrey Halstead, carnal knowledge, five years hard labour and a Hogging. The prisoner collapsed on hearing the sentence.
