KUMARA JUBILEE

Reminiscences of the old gold-dig-gings at Kumara persisted at the meeting pf the Jubilee Finance Committee held on Friday evening and tho many reminders of the town’s past stirring history suggested very forcibly what will probably take place next March when the remnant of the old pioneers and past and present citizens of Kumara meet round the festive board in a great re-union. The Treasurer, Mr R. Ford, reported good progress bad been made in the matter of donations given ami promised, and many suggestions for widening the circle of appeal for assistance are to he acted upon. The Mayor (ATr A. R. Spiers) strongly emphasised the importance of making the occasion of the Jubilee a fitting one. The memory of the old West ( oast pioneers was sac red to men and women throughout the Dominion and he te!t sure that many, though now widely scattered, would desire to meet to do honour to those who arc still left of the hardy men who carved out the town of Kumara and suffered so many hardships to win that vast amount of gold from the surrounding district. He expressed satisfaction at the extent of financial assistance already promised. Nothing further had been heard from the Minister of Mines in regard to the promise given to make a grant, but he would again get in touch with the Afinister on the subject. Mr Evondon expressed the opinion that they would need all the financial assistance possible if hospitality was to he given to all those expecting to he present, lie already know of several who were coming long distances to he present at the re-union and he thought it would he wise if old residents were asked to communicate early with the Secretary to ensure their representation. The Hon. Secretary (Air J. A. Peevcr) reported that arrangements were in hand and that every op|x>rtunity would he given to those intending to he present lo make early application for seats at the re-union banquet.
