[Australia & N.Z. Cable Association.] r.S. NAVAL APPROPRIATIONS. (Received Ibis day at 10.25 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 20. Following tbe statement from Swampscott that President Ccolidge is resentful of wlnit be ecnsiders propaganda in Wasbington against his economy programme be intends to carry through bis proposed retrenchments despite efforts to make tbe Army and Shipping Board isuffer unless tbe appropriations were increased. The Navy Department declared, after a week’s conference, that it has finally worked out a revised estimate meeting with the economy demands in the new Budget. Current appropriations are barely sufficient to maintain the Navy at ifs present strength which is below tin' standard allowed by tbe treaty. A reduction is possible only through the proposed curtailment of activities, including several shore estaolishmonts on tbe Eastern Coast, slashing requirements for new construction, cutting the aviation estimates with the transfer to tbe Pacific of tbe major portion of tbe naval operations during tbe permanent location of tbe battle fleet there. The navy officers are united in their !«- lief that the navy is top heavy with shore activities on tbe Atlantic side, though it realised the proposal to abolish any stations will meet with bitter political opposition. M A t’DK BEST MR* VOYAGE. AVASHINGTON. Aug. 20. _ MacMillan’s ship has resumed her 'H south-hound voyage after being weather bound several days on the north west ioast of Greenland.
